Meter is the rhythm of your poem. Listen to a popular song and you’ll find it easy to discover the beat. In the same way, poetry has it’s own beat and it’s just as easy to find.Below is a chart that shows the beat of two lines of Shakespeare. Notice one note is unstressed, or quiet, (da) while another is stressed, or loud, (DUM). A pair of these notes, one loud and one quiet, is called a foot. String these feet together and you have the meter for your poem.Experimenting with meter can produce new and creative poetic sounds, energize the reader, or convey dark or light moods.
